What is cold bridging?
Cold bridging occurs when there are gaps or reductions in insulation, creating areas where heat can transfer more easily. The main concern with thermal or cold bridging is that when insulation is interrupted by a material with higher thermal conductivity, energy will flow through these elements. Simply put, conductive materials create a bridge between the interior and exterior of a building. In colder climates, this can lead to increased heat loss at these points.
Cold Bridging Solutions
The ArmaGirt Z Girt is a nonconductive cladding support system, capable of supporting most insulation and cladding applications. This thermally broken material helps prevent condensation and limits heat flow issues that might occur without a thermal break. Modeling shows that using ArmaGirt Z Girt in cladding projects significantly improves wall thermal efficiency by reducing heat transfer. Its innovative design allows attachments to enhance the overall performance of the wall assembly. For optimal results, combining Z-girt, clips and shims provides minimal thermal conductivity while maintaining high mechanical strength for load transfer.
Armatherm FRR is a robust thermal break suitable for heavier structural loads while minimizing conductive heat transfer through insulation. This material combines low thermal conductivity with high compressive strength and has been specified in numerous structural steel connections, transferring loads in both moment and shear conditions. Made from reinforced thermoset resin, it is fire-resistant, supports up to 43,000 psi, and has an R-value of 0.9 per inch, making it ideal for structural steel and façade applications.
Armatherm 500 is a high-strength polyurethane thermal break, available in multiple densities to accommodate a range of building loads. Incorporating Armatherm 500 in projects significantly reduces energy consumption and condensation issues. The thermoset polyurethane offers exceptional strength and insulation, with R-values up to 3.8 per inch, far superior to aerated concrete or wood blocking. Armatherm 500 can handle loads ranging from 20 psi to 4,000 psi, providing reliable structural performance alongside energy efficiency.
