Armatherm™ FRR Structural Thermal Break Material
(Thermal Insulation Material – TIM)
Armatherm™ FRR combines low thermal conductivity with exceptionally high compressive strength and has been used in hundreds of structural steel framing connections to transfer loads in both moment and shear conditions.
Armatherm™ FRR is made from a reinforced thermostat resin, offering inherenet fire resistance making it an excellent choice for structural steel and façade thermal break connections. It can support up to 43,000 psi and has an R-value of 0.9 per inch.
Armatherm™ Thermal Break Pads may also be referred to as Thermal Bridges, balcony isolators, structural thermal breaks, cantilever steelwork isolation, cold bridge pads, thermal partitions, steelwork breaks or cold bridging solutions. All these solutions use TIM to limit thermal bridging.

Armatherm™ Thermal Washers and Bushings
Even with an insulation pad, some small thermal transfer can still occur through connecting bolts. Armatherm™ bushings and washers can be installed on the warm face of the structure to reduce this transfer. Adding a thermal break at the bolt connection can cut heat loss by up to 4% per bolt, depending on wall assembly design.
In demanding environments such as indoor swimming pools, a polyurethane nut cap can be used to prevent condensation on bolt heads by shielding the cold surface from the internal atmosphere.

With load capacity up to 40,000 psi and the same R-value of 0.9 per inch, Armatherm™ FRR also offers excellent mechanical performance. Water-resistant and inert, it is ideal for cladding fixings, foundation-to-wall transitions, column bases and roof penetrations.
Armatherm™ FRR can be installed in new builds to ensure optimal energy efficiency as well as in renovations to address poorly insulated connections in existing structures. For maximum impact, these solutions should be planned early in the design stage so that architects can meet the stricter efficiency targets.
As a high-performance structural thermal break, FRR provides insulation between interior and exterior steel and/or concrete to prevent bridging, enhance envelope performance, cut heat loss and reduce the risk of interior condensation caused by cold transfer.
Thermal Breaks in Concrete and Steel
Valued for its strength, durability and thermal mass, concrete is commonly used across construction projects, however penetrations to the building envelope or connections with other materials can still result in thermal bridges. These bridges reduce efficiency, increase energy costs and compromise building performance. Incorporating structural thermal breaks into framework, foundations and envelope details is essential to maintain efficiency.
When used in parapet roof assemblies, Armatherm™ FRR and 500 products help to improve U-values, prevent condensation at structural connections and reduce heat flow to work towards continuous insulation. Efficiency in these areas can increase by as much as 80%, supporting compliance with evolving energy legislation.
