Balcony Canopy Thermal Bridging Solution
One of the most common connection details in structural framing involves balconies and canopies supported by cantilevered steel or aluminum members. These elements typically tie into slab edges or spandrel beams inside the thermal envelope, cutting through insulation and air barrier layers. At these junctions, thermal bridging can lower the U-value of a wall assembly by up to 60%. Using Armatherm™ FRR structural thermal break material can reduce point transmittance (heat flow) at these locations by as much as 70%.
ARMATHERM™
FRR Benefits
- Ultra high compressive strength connections
- Recommended for moment and slip critical connections
- Lasts the life of the building
- Excellent resistance to UV and Moisture absorption
- Reduces condensation and mould
- Outstanding resistance to long term creep
- Manufactured to design specification
Balcony Thermal Break
Armatherm™ FRR is designed to handle load transfer in both moment and shear connections without causing significant rotation. Structural testing of Armatherm™ FRR in balcony connections has measured its performance for creep, rotation and bolt force impact. To be effective, a structural thermal break must preserve the integrity of the balcony or canopy connection while at the same time reducing heat transfer.
