How Armatherm Supports LEED Certification Goals

Armatherm is committed to reducing thermal bridging in buildings by offering several thermal bridging solutions. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to evaluate the environmental performance of a building and encourage sustainable design and construction practices. This also overlaps with the Canadian LEED standards (CAGBC), although not exactly.  Armatherm thermal breaks can contribute to LEED points in several ways, primarily in the categories related to energy efficiency and sustainable design. Here are some aspects to consider:

 

Energy and Atmosphere (EA) Credit: Optimize Energy Performance:

– Thermal breaks can enhance the energy performance of a building by reducing thermal bridging. This involves minimizing the direct conduction of heat through building elements, such as walls, roofs, and windows. Thermal bridging is often found in transition connections such as roof penetrations, brick shelves, and column bases.

– The use of thermal breaks can help meet the requirements for a more efficient building envelope, which can contribute to earning points in this credit category.

 

 Materials and Resources (MR) Credit: Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction:

– The use of thermal breaks in building components, such as windows and doors, can contribute to the overall energy efficiency of the building. This, in turn, can reduce the environmental impact over the building’s life cycle, contributing to points in this credit category.

 

Innovation (IN) Credit: Innovation in Design:

– Incorporating innovative strategies, such as advanced thermal break technologies, may be recognized in the Innovation in Design credit category. Projects can earn extra points for employing new and innovative techniques that go beyond the standard requirements.

Working with LEED Professionals for Project Success

To earn LEED points, it’s crucial to assess the specific requirements and recommendations outlined in the LEED rating system version applicable to the project. Additionally, project teams should work with a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) or Green Associate to ensure compliance with LEED criteria and to explore opportunities for optimizing energy performance and environmental sustainability.
